How to Earn More Money Grooming Dogs

Once you have established yourself as a professional dog groomer, it is time to begin looking at what options will allow you to bring in more money. Through working in the field for many years I have be able to test what methods work, and which ones flop. Save yourself the time and hassle of trying them out yourself and stick to the following proven methods for earning more as a dog groomer.

Offer Discounts

By offering certain discounts you will encourage your customers to visit more often. Also, when they think that they are receiving a bargain price, they will be more likely to tip more. One method that worked wonders for the shop I worked at was a frequent bathers program. We offered weekly baths on smaller dogs (Maltese, Shih Tzu, and Schnauzer) for the seemingly cheap price of only ten dollars. I know it seems crazy, but when you think about it, you are potentially doubling your earnings for that dog each month. A monthly bath would cost this particular owner around twenty five dollars. During the monthly bath all of the basics would have to be done. Nails, ear plucking, pad hair, and eye trimming take precious time. When the dog visits weekly, you can check the basics, but most likely they will last for at least three weeks. So, a dog that was earning you twenty five dollars a month is now earning you forty, and you are not spending much more time on it. A quick bath, dry, and brush is all that is needed.

Spa Treatments

When the economy is going good and customers are comfortable spending extra money, special treatments can greatly increase profits. Specialty shampoos and conditioners can be purchased at many grooming supply retailers. For example, during the holidays, offer your clients a “Luxurious Gingerbread Spa Package.” This package includes a gingerbread scented shampoo, conditioner, and perfume. Top it off with a holiday themed bandana for a special touch. You are literally spending no extra time by completing this package. You already have to use shampoo and conditioner to get the dog clean, now you are just using a scented one. You will, of course, have to purchase the special scented products, but they are not expensive and will last a long time. For year-round treatments, you can offer doggy facials, massage, aromatherapy, or paw cream. Owners like the fact that their pet is receiving special treatment, and they are willing to pay for the extra time you will spend pampering their pet.

Extras

Little things can add up quickly when they are popular with your customers. Offer to paint toenails, add designer bows, or brush the dog’s teeth for an added fee. I had one client that would come in weekly just so that I would paint her dog’s nails. Another option that worked really well for us was offering a Plaqclnz treatment. The company provides you with brochures and posters to encourage customer curiosity. If you don’t know what it is, Plaqclnz is just like the water pick your dentist uses to clean your teeth. It will take extra time for you to complete to treatment, so price accordingly. The company also offers a “take-home” treatment.

Retail

Some groomers avoid selling retail products because they imagine there will be a lot of hassle associated with it, but that is usually not the case. Many small businesses would be happy to place their products in your business free of charge. Then, when you sell one, you put aside the money due to the company and the remainder is profit. Make sure that you offer relevant products, such as doggy vitamins, collars, and treatments such as the at home Plaqclnz mentioned earlier. An example of the possible earnings is as follows. A 12 pack case of Plaqclnz costs $10.98 per bottle. I sold them to my customers for $20.00 per bottle. After selling out of all 12, I had earned $108.24. It didn’t take much time and took no special skills.

All of the above ideas will help you generate more earnings to the grooming salon you work at. It is also advised that you take the time to talk with your regular customers and ask them their opinion. What do they wish you offered? Would they use the frequent bathers program if you offered it? Take the ideas listed here and expand on them. They will help you grow your business and earn more money right away.
